As if nothing of relevance happens in the outside world, the Arts Institute continues its research on the archaeology of meaning in material form. In addition to reflection on the ethics and aesthetics of the archive, attention should also be given to the psychology of the space. Spaces, whether light, empty and clean or dark, crammed and dusty, have the potential to enable and provoke contemplation. Their atmospheres are not given, not ready to be objectively sensed and experienced. We don’t observe a space. We make its meaning and feeling while being there. Paradoxically, while being ‘there’, we unavoidably alienate ourselves from the surrounding. While the space is ‘present’, we can never be ‘there’.
